Leigh, an alumna of foster care, spent nine years and more than twenty placements floundering in the system. And so, naturally, she's a social worker and wanna-be writer with an MSW from the University of Denver.
Leigh has been working and volunteering in the field of child welfare since 1990, and early in her career, provided case management for youth tranisitioning out of foster care while teaching life skills programs that she developed. During her employment with Casey Family Programs, Leigh was a critical player in the development of the alumni relations department and the social movement that led to the formation of FCAA.
“Aging out of foster care can be like realizing the glass isn't half full, it's empty. Or worse yet, there is no glass. What then? I like that people of the system, from the system are working together to shape an answer. We are all part of the solution.”
While pregnant with her second child, Leigh launched a small consulting business providing group facilitation, research, technical writing, editing and project management. She dreams of publishing a series of books, and in the meantime has realized the dream of creating her very own family.
Leigh is married to a man with a thick German accent and is raising her two sons as bilingually as possible.
FCAA is proud to announce that Leight is the lead writer, editor, and project manager of our new resource for young people in transition, the Handbook for Life after Foster Care.
