Connecting Today...Transforming Tomorrow

FCAA MEMBERS AND OTHER ADVOCATES CELEBRATE AS HR 6307 PASSED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON 6/24/08!

Foster Care Alumni of America has officially endorsed pending federal legislation co-sponsored by Representatives Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Jerry Weller (R-IA).   FCAA members from around the country contacted their representatives, resulting not only in 21 additional co-sponsors for the bill, but also passing of the bill in the House!

The Fostering Connections to Success Act, H.R. 6307, is a broad bill that has support from both Republicans and Democrats in the US House of Representatives.  Basically, this bill would do the following:

·         Promote adoption for the 127,000 foster children waiting for families by reauthorizing the successful Adoption Incentive Program which has increased adoptions in all 50 states
·         Require states to keep siblings together when they enter foster care whenever possible.
·         Provide greater resources to train the foster care workforce including private agencies and court personnel.
·         Better support continuity of health care and education.
·         Support the transition to adulthood and extend foster care beyond the age of 18.
·         Support families who are qualified to serve as permanent kinship guardians of youth who would otherwise be raised by strangers.
·         Improve access to federal support for Native American children.
