2017 Scholarship Recipients

Meet our three 2017 scholarship recipients

 

Tamisha Macklin is from Denver, Colorado and a wife and mother who is actively pursuing her BSSW at Metropolitan State University of Denver. In addition to her studies, she works full time with transition-aged youth who were previously in foster care, helping them on their journey to adulthood. Tamisha also volunteers for the nonprofit Elevating Connections where she helps reunite siblings separated in foster care.

  • Colorado Children and Youth Information Sharing (CCYIS) Initiative (2009-2013)
  • Colorado Disparities Leadership Committee member (2010-2012)
  • Colorado Juvenile Defender Coalition Member (CJDC) (2013-2015)
  • Family Integrated Treatment Court Community Review Board member (2012-2015)
  • Clothes to Kids Community Advisory Council member  (2012-present)

 

Lan Truong is pursuing her doctorate in Biology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Lan became a Big Sister after her experience as a Little during foster care. Advocating for higher educational opportunities for foster youth is her passion, and she volunteers to conduct college preparation and financial literacy workshops.

 

 

 

Some of Lan’s accomplishments include:

  • Law Clerk and Intern to Former Texas Comptroller, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, investigation of psychotropic drug use among Texas foster youth (2006)
  • Americorp Educational Award (2006)
  • Fulbright-Hays Scholar (2007)
  • National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (2008)
  • Invited Speaker at the Texas Reach Conference: Helping Foster Youth Reach Their Dream of a College Education, Texas State University (2010)
  • Invited Speaker at the Foster Care Alumni Orientation, Austin Community College (2010)
  • CUNY Science Fellowship (2013)
  • Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellow – Honorable Mention (2014, 2016)

 

Timothy Bell is a second year Master’s degree student at the University of Washington’s Evans School for Public Policy & Governance. He is also pursuing a degree in Ethics from the UW School of Philosophy’s Program on Values in Society. His thesis involves the market failures that drive the thriving personal information collection market which decreases both privacy and security for users and consumers. Tim is a member of the FCAA, Washington Chapter.

  • Member of FosterClub Board of Directors
  • Member and coordinator for the inaugural National Foster Care Youth & Alumni Policy Council

  • Featured  story teller on “The Moth”  podcast and stage performance
